Easter

Irises blooming in the Easter garden

A few weeks ago, I couldn’t stop complaining about the lack of blooms on my various irises.

It seemed that everywhere I looked my garden blogging friends were showing off their frilly friends.

And I was having a serious case of bloom envy.

Not to mention the nagging doubts about my gardening ability.

Should I be doing something different?

Did I need to fertilize them?

Did I plant them in the wrong places?

Should they be divided (even those they are all relatively new and small clumps)?

But a few days ago, I was ecstatic to discover several of my irises blooming away.

This pale lavender iris is a passalong from Pam at Digging — she calls it Shoshona’s Iris. I love the beautiful color.

Then the interesting gold and brown iris bloomed the next day.

While it’s planted close to my Louisiana Iris ‘Professor Neil,’ which is a deep maroon with gold, they weren’t both blooming at the same time this week.

Maybe I can ask them to do that for me when the next ones bloom!

Happy Easter!

Happy Day…

Here’s wishing you a warm spring Sunday and a Happy Easter, if you are celebrating that today.

In the spirit of rebirth and renewal, I wanted to share with you these beautiful Texas wildflower photos taken by my sweet husband this week.

Even though we are weeks behind in the emergence of spring flowers, thanks to our unseasonably cold winter, most things are making up for it now.

With a wet fall, winter and spring, our wildflowers here in Central Texas are bursting forth right now.

They are prettier and more widespread than they’ve been in years.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend.

Easter Dinner

Our wildlife friends enjoyed a nice Easter Dinner today as well, thanks to my husband and daughter who filled all the feeders for them yesterday.

My husband captured some great shots today, here you see Mr. Cardinal – our dear friend and long-time neighbor – having a feast of sunflower seeds.
Mr. Squirrel, though technically uninvited, continues to come for dinner anyway!  Neither dogs barking at the window nor feral/neighbor cats nor my husband cranking open the window and hissing at him seem to have much effect.  In spite of his having broken my outrageously expensive Christmas gift cottage house feeder, I’ve given in…after all, squirrels have to eat, too.
Look closely, this is our first beautiful goldfinch of the season, right in the middle of the branch.  They are so bright and colorful.

Not captured on film today (well, not really film, either!), were a scrub jay (similar to a blue, but without the white markings on its wings.  We also had titmice, sparrows, house finches,  and wrens.  I think that the cliff swallows have come to reclaim their nest on the front porch because spots of bird poop appeared today just under the nest.  I’ll have to keep an eye out for them – last year someone had two sets of babies up there and it was a joy to watch them grow up and learn to fly on their own.
Happy Easter to all~
