My DH took this picture of me in the greenhouse as I was giving him the tour after it was finished today! (Not the best photo, but he took it with his Blackberry – I’m just glad to have it!)
So now I am itching to be able to put plants in there…which will be very limited until our hot weather cools off. Plants would broil in there now — it’s 85 degrees for the highs these days.
Electrician and plumber come tomorrow and pea gravel for the ground on Monday and then some agaves and cacti and succulents are going in there. I’m sure I will put some cute little doo-dads in there pretty quickly, too!

Instead of pea gravel you should put the shredded tree mulch down like Malcolm Beck did with his green houses. He told us at our native plant meeting that it has slow releases of nitrogen and CO2, both good for plants. He remarked that he went from a mediocre green house gardener to unbelievable after doing that. It’s cheaper too. Just thought I’d let you know.
Oh I’m so happy for you! It’s a fine looking greenhouse too. The future of plants looks brighter now.
How exciting to have a new greenhouse, and it has gone up so quickly. It will be fun to fill it with plants to tend.
Perhaps the workers were thinking your gardening footwear was very spiffy.

Bob – thanks for the tip. I was originally going to do mulch, because of the ease of adding to it, but the greenhouse people say the pea gravel gives you humidity and holds in the heat better in the winter. Guess I’d better rethink this!
Anna – thanks – I think my tender potted plants will be happy in there as long as I keep on top of the temperatures!
Northern shade – ah, thanks for the positive thoughts on my red rubber boots. They are really cute as can be. You know, my mom always said wear something nice when you feel bad and wearing those boots when I am working hard and traipsing through the mud does help!
Jan – thanks. I’ll be putting a few things in it soon enough (gotta work out the ventilation and know how hot it gets inside when it’s 90 outside!) Can’t wait to show it to my plants!

I just went out and stood in it and imagined where the big pots (little trees) will go and where the shade loving things need to be and all that! I will have a chair in it ASAP because I love to sit in there when the sun it out but the air is cold.

Looks great Diana. I know how excited you are about starting seeds and cuttings. We put our greenhouse up in November and I bought some pretty colorful things to brighten it up. I think we have the same benches. Amish?
I have pea gravel and yes it is good for the winter warmth. Also I put a lot of pots on the ground so watering them isn’t a problem. Water just runs through. I also save all my empty gallon milk jugs and fill them with water arranged around the outside edges of the greenhouse. They heat up during the day and help when there is a frost. I also have a milk house heater for when it gets really cold. This is just for winter and spring of course which is really the only time I use the greenhouse- too hot in summer and not needed. We had to buy shade cloth and now we have a vine covering. It made the greenhouse tolerable through the summer. I now have my citrus in and some agaves that are not frost hardy. I can hardly move in there. We have a temporary drip line in there for watering. Just a few ideas for you to mull over.

How awesome for you. My greenhouse was an anniversary prestent. I goes back into use every year right around our anniversary. Bob had a good idea, the bark mulch has worked much better than anything else for me.
Pam – I’m sure it will fill it up in no time; I’m gathering up ideas for things to do besides overwinter my pots, and trying to remember what I did when I had one before!

Lancashire Rose – Thanks for the ideas – I especially like the milk gallon tip – I’ll have to do that. We will have electricity and a heater. The shade cloth may be a greater need since the sun gets so hot here even when it’s too cold at night for plants to be outside.
Aunt Debbi – that’s a sweet reminder of your anniversary. I’m still trying to decide between mulch and pea gravel — I’m leaning to the gravel because of the heaters running on the floor making things hot down there on the ground…
